Elizabeth May Statement on Nuclear Disarmament

On Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 in Statements

Mr. Speaker, I rise to draw the attention of the House to a worsening situation in arms control. Globally, we have seen an alarming development in states modernizing nuclear weapons for what they describe as tactical purposes. This may remind some of my colleagues of Dr. Strangelove.

We simply cannot use nuclear weapons. Rather, we should be disarming globally. A working group this summer in the United Nations is working to present, for the United Nations, a 2017 negotiation of a treaty with the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons. I do not understand how it could have happened, but in August Canada voted against taking that to the UN General Assembly.

It is going to the UN General Assembly. Another vote will take place in as little as a few days’ time. It is critically important that Canada stand with those who want to ensure we have a world without nuclear weapons.

    Bravo, Elizabeth May!

When I heard that our government voted in the UN General Assembly against ridding the world of nuclear weapons I was surprised and disappointed. So glad that Elizabeth May is a voice of reason in Parliament, and she is representing the views of so many of us.
