Elizabeth May Statement on World Oceans Day

OTTAWA – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Saanich – Gulf Islands), issued the following statement on World Oceans Day:

“Our oceans are at risk. They are threatened by climate change, over-fishing, land-based sources of marine pollution, and ocean acidification. Today is an opportunity for Canadians to take action and defend our oceans and coasts. Our oceans are 75% of our planet. Oceans are the habitat for millions of species. Oceans play a vital role in regulating global climate, they are also an important food source and economic driver in coastal communities.

“This year’s theme – Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet – is appropriate. It drives home the point that the health of our oceans and coastal economies are at risk. The threat of ocean acidification driven by the build up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is already changing the pH of our oceans. On Vancouver Island, where I live, oyster growers have already moved operations for the earliest life stages of oysters to Hawaii because the colder waters of Canada are already so acidic oysters cannot be cultivated. If we don’t act to protect the oceans, all life on earth is imperiled.”

“Unfortunately, Stephen Harper has put oceans at risk. His economic policy of increasing the shipment of dangerous substances, such as diluted bitumen, by tanker and pipeline is reckless. His administration has dropped the ball on its legal responsibilities to protect endangered whale species on all our coasts. ”

“Today, on World Oceans Day, let’s work together to defend our marine environments for future generations to enjoy.”
