Credible independent budgetary estimates are crucial to accurate financial forecasting, federal government accountability, and form the basis upon which important budgetary decisions can be made. Since the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Office was created, it has served Canadians well as a non‐partisan source of reliable information about the finances of the federal government.
The effectiveness of the Parliamentary Budget Office is endangered because of threatened funding, and its independence is impeded because it is currently vulnerable to political pressure as a subservient agent of the Library of Parliament.

Your petitioners call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to defend the autonomy of the Parliamentary Budget Office by designating the Parliamentary Budget Officer an independent Officer of Parliament, and ensure it has the funding necessary to do its job and oppose cuts to its budget that undermine its ability to verify, estimate, and provide fiscal accountability.
