Students who are forced to take out a loan in order to attain a postsecondary education (PSE) will pay considerably more for that education than those who can afford to pay upfront. Due to chronic federal underfunding of core postsecondary education, tuition fees have soared and average student debt that is approaching $25,000.
Canada’s student loan system should be clear, fair, and responsive to student needs and circumstances. Instead, it is currently a problem for thousands of student borrowers because of mishandled files, rigid and complicated processes, inadequate debt relief measures, abusive collection agencies, and other problems.
