December 03, 2017
(OTTAWA) – A statement in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

“The obstacles to living an equal and dignified life in Canada for those living with disabilities are significant, but we most certainly can overcome them. Far too many Canadians with disabilities are relegated to poverty and social exclusion. If we are to reach the fair and equitable society that all Canadians have the right to live in, government has a duty to step up to the plate,” said Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich–Gulf Islands).

“I welcome the Trudeau Administration’s stated commitment to address many of the concerns of those living with physical or mental disabilities in Canada, and awaits with great anticipation the legislation the Liberal government promised to introduce in 2018. I will continue to push for the adoption of a Guaranteed Liveable Income, which I believe is the best solution to addressing systemic poverty in Canada, especially for those living with disabilities and their families,” continued Ms. May.

“In the spirit of cherished values like inclusivity and social justice, I will always prioritize rigorous advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities in Canada. Each and every one of us has the right to be integrated into all facets of our society, regardless of one’s physical or mental condition,” concluded Ms. May.
