Week in Review: February 24 - 28 (le français suit)
(Green caucus with author Guy Dauncey at an All-Party Climate Caucus event)
This week started with a rally in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs on Monday morning. MP Paul Manly and caucus staff joined more than four hundred youth activists in front of the Prime Minister’s Office and marched passed the Parliament Buildings. That day, MP Jenica Atwin spoke to Bill C-6, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act. Bill C-6 would amend the oath of citizenship, to acknowledge the treaty and land rights of Indigenous peoples. Jenica stood to say that the Bill was a good first step, but did not go far enough.
On Sunday evening, Teck Resources Limited announced that they pulled their application for a giant oilsands mine in Alberta. Following this announcement, the Conservatives pressed for an emergency debate, and the House was called to sit until midnight on Tuesday. The Green caucus rejected that Teck's decision constituted an emergency of any kind, and countered that the real crisis is the climate emergency. Elizabeth delivered her speech just before midnight.
On Wednesday, Elizabeth chaired a meeting with the All-Party Climate Caucus. The guest speaker was Guy Dauncey, author, eco-futurist, and constituent of Paul Manly. Mr. Dauncey presented his work, Climate Emergency: a 26-Week Transition Program for Canada.
This week, Paul Manly presented an amendment on the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) during the clause-by-clause debate, which was finalized and reported to the House. While the majority of the committee voted against Paul's amendment, he was commended for his contribution. As well, Second Reading debate began on Bill C-7, the improved Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) legislation. Elizabeth spoke to the bill on Thursday afternoon.
Read on for Green Caucus interventions, questions, and statements in the House this week.
