Statement on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada

On Friday, December 7th, 2018 in Press Releases

OTTAWA — The Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) issued the following statement to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada:

“Nearly three decades since the École Polytechnique massacre, we continue to mourn the 14 murdered women.”

“The shameful reality is that far too many Canadians face gender-based violence and harassment in their homes, workplaces and communities. We must do more to eliminate it.”

“This is especially true when it comes to Indigenous communities, for whom the overlapping violence of misogyny and colonialism creates heightened cycles of abuse and trauma.”

“The Green Party of Canada commits to making public and private spaces safer for all women, femmes and girls in its work in educating the next generations on consent, respect and gender equality.”

“We encourage all members of society, particularly men, to create a world where girls are free to be girls, and women and femmes can live in safety.”
