OTTAWA — Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf-Islands) will moderate a special event at the University of British Columbia next Tuesday featuring world renowned climate campaigner Bill McKibben.
“Bill McKibben was one of the first voices to raise the alarm about climate change with his 1989 book The End of Nature,” said Ms. May. “He went on to co-found 350.org which has become the biggest climate campaign in the world.
“As scientists continue to raise the alarm about the unchecked growth of greenhouse gas emissions, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that the global average temperature increase must remain below 1.5 if we hope to avoid catastrophic climate impacts. We are in a climate crisis. Canadians of all ages are concerned and the Green Party is calling on the government to implement serious climate action now.”
In 2014, Bill McKibben was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes referred to as the “alternative Nobel.” The End of Nature has been translated into 24 languages and is recommended as the first book for a general audience about climate change. McKibben’s stories of people around the globe engaged in environmental action are uplifting and inspiring providing realistic approaches to protecting the planet and mobilizing for action.
