Communication and Engagement & Advocacy Internships for Students and Recent Graduates

MP May is committed to amplifying youth expertise and creating learning opportunities for young people interested in public affairs.

Internships provide a unique chance for the MP’s office to learn from students, while offering professional development and work experience with a leader dedicated to sustainability, social justice, and service.

Internships are remote or hybrid, based out of MP May’s constituency office in Sidney, British Columbia. These non-partisan opportunities span 10–12 weeks. To apply, complete and submit the online application form at https://qrco.de/mpmayinternship.

APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Intended for current university students or recent graduates, the internship program runs during the summer, fall, and spring.

The dates and application deadlines for internship cycles are as follows:

  • Summer Cycle: May to August (Priority deadline: March 10)
  • Fall Cycle: September to December (Priority deadline: July 10)
  • Spring Cycle: January to April (Priority deadline: November 10)

POSITIONS OVERVIEW

The Communications Intern is remote or hybrid, while the Engagement & Advocacy Intern is hybrid with in-person elements. Duration and hours for each position will be adapted based on applicants’ preferences and the office’s needs during a given period.

Communications Intern

  • Assist with daily media monitoring on local issues, reviewing and summarizing emerging issues affecting constituents
  • Assist in creating social media infographics for the Member about local events, resources, and issues
  • Collaborate with the Constituency Coordinator on social media innovation, youth outreach, and strategy
  • Complete assigned, special communications tasks for the constituency as assigned (for example, editing Householders)
  • Assist with correspondence; organizing mail and e-mails from constituents
  • Minimum hours: 5-10 hours per week, up to 22.5

Engagement & Advocacy Intern

  • Answer constituent phone calls
  • Greet constituents at the front desk
  • Take notes at briefings and events
  • Assist with research for constituent cases and correspondence
  • Perform a variety of community-based duties, such as conducting research on local issues and assisting the Saanich-Gulf Islands team at community events
  • Identify, pitch, and execute a special project of interest, related to improving public participation in government and local advocacy
  • Minimum hours: 16-22.5 hours per week, up to 37.5

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

External Funding. We support interns in applying for external funding or university credits, such as through co-op programmes. Unless an applicant is financially sponsored by an outside organization, all paid House of Commons Employees must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Stipend. If external funding is not secured, interns are provided with a travel and equipment stipend.
