Please read and watch the following statement and remarks made on March 18th 2024 by Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, regarding the passing of the late Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, 18th Prime Minister of Canada:
“It was an honour to rise in the House and pay tribute to late Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. While I was never a member of his party, and he had more than enough reason to hold it against me that I resigned on principle when his environment minister broke the law by approving the Rafferty and Alameda dams, we became friends. I will forever be grateful for his environmental leadership and for his many acts of kindness and friendship.
It was under Mulroney that Canada fought pollution and ended the threat of acid rain, negotiated the 1987 Montreal Protocol that saved the ozone layer – and thus all life on earth – as well as the Rio Earth Summit 1992 treaties to protect biodiversity and address the threat of the climate crisis. All of this doesn’t even address other achievements, like working to free Nelson Mandela from prison and end apartheid in South Africa, mobilizing to confront the Ethiopian famine and reaching Canada’s highest ever level of international development assistance.”
