SUMMARY:[:en]The Planet is on Fire: Can the Canadian Federation respond\, or do our provincial-federal squabbles threaten our future?[:]
DESCRIPTION:The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government Distinguished Speakers Series Presents \n“The Planet Is on Fire: Can the Canadian Federation Respond or Do Our Provincial-Federal Squabbles Threaten Our Future?” \nElizabeth May\, OC\, MP \nWednesday\, March 15\, 2023 \n7:00 pm–9:00 pm \nMulroney Hall 2070 \nCanada has the worst climate record in the G7. Our climate record is not just a bit worse than other industrialized countries. Our record is a lot worse. There are many explanations that receive media attention: the number and influence of fossil fuel lobbyists\, the benefits to our economy of oil and gas\, and the fractious political landscape at the federal level. Little examined is the structure of our federation. In this talk\, Ms. May will compare and contrast how the European Union with its 28 separate and sovereign nation-states (29 before Brexit)\, speaking 24 official languages\, have consistently been better able to act collectively address the climate threat than the 14 governments of the federal-provincial and territorial federation called Canada. With a nod to the prime minister whose legacy in many ways is this the Mulroney Institute\, Ms. May will review the tools used by the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney in confronting acid rain and the threat to the ozone layer. And ask why those tools are rusting out behind the shed. \nPlease join us in person or via Zoom.

SUMMARY:[:en]United for Old Growth - March and Rally[:]
DESCRIPTION:Join Elizabeth in a united march & rally with thousands of people to send a clear message to the BC gov: Keep your promises — protect old-growth now. \nStart at Spirit Square (city hall) 12:00 pm and march to the BC Legislature. \nFrom the organizers: \nIt’s been two years since the BC NDP government promised to protect old-growth and a paradigm-shift in forest stewardship\, but still the most at-risk forests continue to be logged. No more talk. The time for action is now. \nOver 170 organizations across the education\, environment\, tourism\, and labour sectors have united around the Declaration for Old Growth. On February 25th\, we’re coming together in person to hold the BC government and new Premier accountable. \nThis peaceful march and rally will begin at Centennial Square (City Hall) in Victoria at noon\, proceeding to the lawn of the Legislature for a rally featuring powerful speakers and performers from 1:30-3:30 — full line-up TBA. \n\nIf you’re on Facebook\, invite your network here.\nIf you’re a part of an organization\, union or business\, sign on to the declaration here.\n\n*The organizers acknowledge this event is being organized on the lək̓ʷəŋən territories of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations\, and call on all participants to be respectful of this. All forests grow on the territories of Indigenous Peoples\, and when we stand together for old-growth\, we also stand for the return of land to Indigenous Peoples.* \n— \nMore information: \nThe goal of this march and rally is to demonstrate the broad-based support for old-growth protection in BC. We’re rallying around calls on the BC NDP government to keep its promises on old-growth\, such as the June 2022 resolution by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (view on page 38 here). \nAll are welcome\, and we ask for mutual respect for all who come to stand together at this event. Participants are asked to show up in whatever way they feel called to\, from their simple presence to more creative artistic expressions. We ask that space be provided for elders and those with mobility needs\, and that provided chairs and spaces close to the stage be left to those who most need them. \nThis march and rally will be outdoors\, but masks are always a good idea around lots of people — participants are encouraged to wear one. \n— \nSupport \nDonate: \nHelp make this happen (anything helps!): https://chuffed.org/project/help-protect-ancient-forests-bc \nVolunteer: \nCan you help make this the historic rally that our old growth forests need and deserve? To make the dream of old growth protection a reality in BC we need dozens of outreach volunteers for postering and other promotional activities ASAP. We also need marshals\, set-up/take down\, sound tech\, and elder care volunteers for the day of the event. \nIf any of these volunteer roles sound like a good fit or\, if you are unsure about these roles but want to lend a helping hand\, get in touch today and our volunteer coordination crew will happily onboard you to the team 🙂 Email volunteerforoldgrowth@gmail.com with your name\, phone number\, and the volunteer role you’re most interested in (if any). \nFor questions or more information\, please contact: united4oldgrowth@gmail.com

SUMMARY:[:en]How can we ensure governments keep their promises on climate and biodiversity?[:]
DESCRIPTION:Dalhousie Law alum Elizabeth May\, MP and leader of the Green Party\, will review the elements of why the Montreal Protocol worked in protecting the ozone layer\, while the climate and biodiversity commitments have not yet made a difference. A wide-ranging Q and A session will follow. Elizabeth will be open to any questions on topics of interest from right to a healthy environment\, her bill on environmental justice\, to impact assessment law\, and the amendments to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act currently before Parliament.
