SUMMARY:[:en]Climate Change and Environmental Human Rights on the Tibetan Plateau[:]
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 7\, 2022\n11:00 to 12:30 EST\nONLINE | ZOOM Webinar\nEvent in English. | Free and open to all.\nRSVP required to receive the link: REGISTER HERE.\nThe Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) is pleased to partner with the Canada Tibet Committee to present this online event: \nClimate Change and Environmental Human Rights on the Tibetan Plateau\nThe impact of climate change on the Tibetan plateau has been extreme\, causing unprecedented natural disasters due to rapid glacial retreat\, permafrost degradation\, and extensive desertification. Due to the lack of international attention on the significance of the Tibetan plateau\, there is very little to no international scrutiny or observation on Chinese government policies in Tibet. China’s development model in Tibet ignores the Tibetan people’s actual social\, environmental\, and economic needs. \nWhile it has been difficult promoting discussions on the significance of the Tibetan plateau\, it is far more challenging to address how the human rights of the Tibetan people are disrupted by climate change and by the Chinese government policies and practices that needlessly exacerbate the situation in Tibet. The first victims of China’s so-called environmental conservation practices are Tibetan nomads who have lived an eco-friendly and self-sufficient lifestyle on the vast grasslands of the Tibetan plateau for thousands of years. The Chinese government has removed more than two million Tibetans from their land and pushed them into large-scale settlements without any consultation or compensations\, or enough medical\, educational\, or business opportunities to support a dignified life. \nTibetans who speak publicly of such issues are arrested\, tortured\, and even killed in some cases. On 19 May 2020\, five UN experts called for all charges against Tibetan environmental activist A-Nya Sendgra to be dropped stating “the criminalisation of the legitimate work” of A-Nya Sengdra can be seen as part of “a wider crackdown on Tibetan” human rights defenders. The UN experts urged the Chinese Government to comply with international law and lift the charges against him and raised serious concern that he is known to have serious health issues and is being held in extremely poor conditions. \n\nOur Speakers\n\nDavid R. BOYD | UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment\n\nDavid R. Boyd is an environmental lawyer and internationally renowned expert on human rights and the environment. He has a Ph.D. in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from UBC\, a JD from the University of Toronto\, and a business degree from the University of Alberta. His primary focus is on identifying laws and policies that will accelerate the transition to an ecologically sustainable and just future\, both in Canada and across the world. Areas of particular interest include environmental justice\, environmental rights and responsibilities\, the rights of nature\, the debate between regulation and economic instruments\, and urban environmental issues. Boyd is the author of seven books and over 100 articles on environmental issues. \n\nMP Elizabeth MAY | Parliamentary Leader of the Green Party of Canada\, representing the southern Vancouver Island riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands on the territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation.\n\nPrior to running for elected office\, Elizabeth May worked as a lawyer\, a governmental policy advisor and was for seventeen years the Executive Director of Sierra Club of Canada (1989-2006). The ninth leader of the Green Party of Canada (2006 – 2019)\, she was the first Canadian Green to win election in 2011. \n\nDechen PALMO | Research Fellow\, Tibet Policy Institute\, Central Tibetan Administration\, India\n\nDechen Palmo is a research fellow at the Environment and Development Desk of the CTA’s Tibet Policy Institute in Dharamshala\, India. She researches Tibet’s Trans-Boundary Rivers focusing mainly on the Mekong and the Brahmaputra rivers. She pursued her Masters in International Studies from Stella Maris College\, University of Madras\, and M.Phil. in International Relations from the University of Madras. She has also submitted her Ph.D. thesis titled China’s national interests on transboundary water resources: a comparative study of the Brahmaputra and the Mekong river. She has also written and published widely on environmental issues in Tibet caused by the developmental projects of the Chinese government. \nThe panel will be moderated by: \n\nAlex NEVE | Canadian human rights activist and former Secretary-general of Amnesty International Canada\, currently Senior Fellow at the University of Ottawa’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

SUMMARY:[:en]Canada at a Crossroads on China: “Work Together or Perish Together”[:]
DESCRIPTION:1:00 – 4:00 pm EST \nClick here to register. \nIn aiming to “develop and launch a comprehensive Indo-Pacific strategy” and strengthening ties to the US\, the Trudeau government has signalled its intent to join US-led war preparations on the Asia Pacific and provoke China. \nJoin world-renowned linguist and lifetime anti-war activist Noam Chomsky in a webinar to consider the pitfalls of closer alignment with the US empire\, and why diplomacy and working with China are the only option to meet the global challenges ahead. SUMMARY:[:en]Voice from the Ancestral Forest Frontlines - Ceremony\, Speakers\, Performances\, Photo installations\, Info tables\, Frontliners’ Testimony and Evening Film Screenings[:]
DESCRIPTION:Voices from the Ancestral Forest Frontlines:\n\nCeremony\, speakers\, performance\, photo installation\, info tables\, Frontliners’ testimony and evening film screenings. \nWhere: Provincial Legislature\, Victoria\, B.C on Lekwungen territory\nwith gratitude for the blessing and privilege of living and working for a healed world on this beautiful land \nWhen: August 9th\, 2021\, 3 pm- 10:30 pm\n(start with March from Blanshard St. courthouse at 2 pm) \nAll out for this important day of Indigenous ceremony\, prominent speakers\, performances\, testimony from the ancient forest frontlines and evening film screenings in unity and solidarity with frontline land defenders\, forest protectors\, the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs and First Nations community members asserting Title and rights to defend their sovereign homelands from the climate and environmental scourge of continued old-growth logging. \nThis gathering is happening in honour of World Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the 1 year milestone of the Ada’itsx/ Fairy Creek blockades!\nThe event will begin at 2 pm with a street procession from the Victoria courthouse on Blanshard street and proceed to the Legislature for 3 pm. \nBACKGROUND:\n\nThe forests are once again burning in the interior of British Columbia after all-time record summer heat that destroyed the town of Lytton and wiped out an estimated billion marine intertidal organisms on the coast in days. At the same time logging approvals to cut down some of the last 2.7% of what is left of the endangered ancient forests in B.C– our best natural defense against runaway climate change– have increased by 42% to capitalize on the demands of a booming foreign log market. \nOver 500 brave and tenacious forest protectors using innovative hard block tactics\, many representing a young generation literally protecting their future from the grim impacts of a colonial-capitalist economy killing the planet\, have been arrested in militarized RCMP enforcement operations\, for protecting some the last old-growth forest stands on Pacheedaht territory at the invitation of respected elder Bill Jones. \nIn a climate and biodiversity crisis\, in a country being forced to confront its genocidal history of oppression and forced assimilation of Indigenous people\, we gather to support the strong leadership and declarations of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) calling for an immediate halt to logging of at-risk old-growth forests on unceded territories and the nations including Kwakiutl\, Squamish\, Nuxalk\, Gitx’san and others that have declared logging moratoriums on their ancestral lands and the voices of elders\, youth and matriarchs of First Nations communities that are ignored by a government that pays lip service to climate action\, Indigenous rights and drags its heels in delivering on its promises to work with First Nations to implement sweeping forestry reforms\, while the shocking equivalent of 500 soccer fields of old-growth forests are felled by industry in BC every day! \nWe say enough is enough! We stand with Indigenous land defenders\, activist forest protectors and sovereign Indigenous nations to stop the colonial violence on the lands\, waters\, salmon and people and protect these globally significant\, irreplaceable forests that are in the wise words of Bill Jones ” our last connection to our pre-colonial sensitivity”. \nREAD THE RECENT UBCIC Declaration \nITINERARY: \n\n2:00pm – March from the Blanshard St. Courthouse\n3:00pm – Opening Ceremony at the Legislature (please bring drums\, rattles\, songs\, regalia)\n4:00 – 9:00pm – Speakers and performances which will include:\n\nUBCIC Vice President Chief Don Tom (Tsartlip) and secretary Chief Judy Wilson (Secwepemc)\nPacheedaht elder Bill Jones\nTla-o-qui-aht Master carver and knowledge-keeper Joe Martin\nKwakiutl hereditary Chief Dave Mungo Knox who will lead a Copper ceremony\nForest ecologist\, UBC Professor and author Suzanne Simard\nGreen Party federal MPs Elizabeth May and Paul Manly\nBird biologist Royanne Petrell\nRainforest Flying Squad (RFS) representatives\nEmcees: W’SANEC land defender Paul Chiyokten Wagner\, Tli’amon urban Indigenous activist Grandma Losah aka Rose Henry and Joey\n\n\nPerformances by Nostic Marco\, Cello Bride\, Oliver Swain & Friends and Pat & Laura of Carmannah\n9:00pm – 9:30pm – TESTIMONY: Frontline Fairy Creek area forest protectors\, legal observers and journalists share stories and bear witness to land-based community life and RCMP enforcement operations in the arbitrary exclusion zones on Pacheedaht and Dididaht territories\n9:30 – 10:00pm – FILM SCREENINGS: Short video screenings including a trailer of the documentary film\, “Standing with the Ancients” by resident blockade film-maker Jen Muranetz\, “If a Tree Falls” video with Bruce Cockburn and frontline footage\n\nPROTOCOLS:\nRecent events at the Legislature have sadly provoked a backlash of racism against Indigenous people in the local communities. it is important to remain mindful of how our behaviour can trigger events that potentially bring harm to vulnerable communities. This event is under firm protocols from the local host nations for people who are guests on this territory to conduct ourselves in a peaceful way and to refrain from engaging in actions that can bring harm on BIPOC peoples on this territory. A Safety plan will be in place to confront racist behaviour directed at BIPOC people at this event. \nCODE OF CONDUCT\nLook after each other. Nonviolent.\nAvoid engaging abusive people.\nPractice Covid protocols.\nAvoid smoking for the health of many of our seniors and disabled people\nIf you are approached by the media\, please ask them to speak first to people who have been on the frontlines\, particularly Indigenous people\, women and youth. \nBANNERS:\nPlease continue the tradition of bringing large colourful banners to share the message of standing with communities who are actively resisting the destruction of life on Earth and holding government responsible for the destructive status quo. Banners are being requested on the frontlines so consider making one that you can leave with us \nSELF-CARE:\nThis will be a long day in what could be more intense sun and heat. Please take good care of yourselves packing a folding chair\, blankets\, lots of water\, food and sun protection. Prepare to picnic. We will be providing port-a-potties and drinking water and during part of the day the RBCM museum washrooms are available as well. We are trying to make arrangements for food trucks on site. \nDONATIONS:\nPlease help us cover the costs of chair\, table and tent and other rentals\, sound system\, speakers’ honoraria\, copying\, port-a-potty etc. etransfers can be made to the rainforestflyingsquad@gmail.com with a note that the donation is for the Aug9 event! \nSPONSORING GROUPS:\nRainforest Flying Squad\nSocial Environmental Alliance\nElders for Ancient Trees\nUrban Actions for Ancient Forests\nFriends of Carmanah Walbran\nProtectors of the Salish Sea\nIndigenous Solidarity Working Group\nIsland Forest Futures\nRed Cedar Cafe\nStream of Consciousness

SUMMARY:[:en]Conversations with Linda Solomon Wood: Elizabeth May\, Earth Day 2021[:]
DESCRIPTION:For many folks\, going back to the 1980s might signal a return to neon leg warmers\, Star Wars\, and synthpop. For Elizabeth May\, it would probably mean fighting for international ozone layer protection and the 1987 Montreal Protocol\, a benchmark in multilateral agreements for climate action. Through the ‘80s\, the former Green Party leader was beginning her career as an environmental lawyer and policy advisor in Canada. \nYou can’t tell the story of modern environmentalism in Canada without Elizabeth May. May helmed Canada’s Green Party from 2006 until stepping down in 2019. Over those 13 years\, she led the party from obscurity to prominence through a seismic shift in culture as the climate crisis became a pressing international concern. Her tireless work ethic has garnered bipartisan respect; in 2013\, she was recognized by her colleagues as the year’s Hardest Working MP. May currently serves as a Member of Parliament for her longtime\, loyal riding in Saanich-Gulf Islands. She’s also contributed guest columns to National Observer. \nNow\, May is returning as a guest with National Observer founder and editor-in-chief Linda Solomon Wood for a special Conversations event: Earth Day With Elizabeth May.
