DESCRIPTION:The federal government is launching its annual New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) community-based stream 2024-2025 Call for Proposals on August 1st\, 2024.\n\nCommunity based projects are volunteer-based and must: \n\n\n\nAddress one or more program objectives;\nBe local projects that have support from the community;\nBe led or inspired by seniors.\n\n\n\nThe government has identified the following national priorities for these projects: \n\n\n\n\n\n1) Supporting healthy aging;\n2) Preventing senior abuse;\n3) Celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion;\n4) Supporting financial security\n\n\n\n\n\nProjects are funded via annual grants to support senior-led or inspired organizations to a maximum of $25\,000 and are distributed to communities across the country. \n\n\n\nOrganisations can apply for funding until September 12. Projects are eligible to receive up to $25\,000. DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth will attend an annual remembrance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)\, which will take place on Sunday\, May 5th\, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, at the Victoria Jewish Cemetery on Cedar Hill Road (south from Hillside Ave.). Those who perished in the Holocaust will be commemorated not as victims or statistics\, but as the unique individuals that they were\, while also honouring the strength and resilience of survivors and their families. \nAttendees will hear the stories of survivors now buried in the cemetery\, as well as perspectives from students involved in the University of Victoria’s iWitness Holocaust Field School. Mr. Peter Nadler will reflect on how the current rise of antisemitism heightens the commemoration of the Shoah more than ever. \nPlease note this event is open the public.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth May\, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada\, will join the Indigenous leaders from New Brunswick\, Quebec and Ontario in a press conference regarding nuclear waste on Indigenous homelands on April 30 at 10:30am ET. \nThe Government of Canada is investing in and promoting an expansion of nuclear energy across the country. Already\, dozens of communities have radioactively contaminated sites on their homelands\, and they and others must carefully consider the impacts of proposed permanent repositories for nuclear waste on the next seven generations. \nAt the press conference\, Indigenous leaders will share their concerns about the existing situation of nuclear waste and the proposed expansion of the nuclear industry which will generate even more waste that must be safely contained for hundreds of thousands of years. \nNOTE: A recording of the press conference will be shared to this website after it concludes.
