Le petit garrot est le plus petit canard plongeur de la plan\u00e8te et l\u2019un des oiseaux aquatiques dont la beaut\u00e9 est la plus remarquable. Il arrive invariablement \u00e0 son aire d\u2019hivernage c\u00f4ti\u00e8re peu de temps avant ou apr\u00e8s le 298e jour du cycle solaire (le 288e jour du calendrier julien), c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire le 15 octobre. Les naturalistes et les scientifiques se servent de l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de ce canard comme d\u2019un guide indiquant l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019autres animaux migrateurs et le moment des premi\u00e8res gel\u00e9es hivernales.<\/p>\n<p>Cette ann\u00e9e, on a organis\u00e9 une c\u00e9l\u00e9bration au Lillian Hoffar Park qui d\u00e9butera \u00e0 11 h et dont l\u2019h\u00f4te sera la ville de Sidney, dans le district de North Saanich, ainsi que la d\u00e9put\u00e9e Elizabeth May. La chef du Parti vert et d\u00e9put\u00e9e de Saanich-Gulf Islands d\u00e9posera un projet de loi priv\u00e9 demandant de d\u00e9clarer le 15 octobre la journ\u00e9e nationale du petit garrot en l\u2019honneur de ce canard.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Le petit garrot est connu sous le nom de\u201ccanard fougueux\u201d parce qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un tout petit animal tr\u00e8s vif. Il est si ponctuel qu\u2019au moment o\u00f9 vous le voyez arriver, vous vous souvenez de la date instantan\u00e9ment. Toutefois, en raison des modifications climatiques qui se produisent, nous devons surveiller de pr\u00e8s ce petit canard \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Mme May.<\/p>\n<p>Les naturalistes surveillent pour d\u00e9terminer si le moment de la migration du petit garrot se modifie puisque cela pourrait \u00eatre un signal annon\u00e7ant des changements climatiques. Au Royaume-Uni, les scientifiques ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 observ\u00e9 des changements dans les dates d\u2019arriv\u00e9e et de d\u00e9part des animaux migrateurs, ce qu\u2019ils attribuent aux changements climatiques.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Un calendrier aussi pr\u00e9cis que celui du petit garrot permet de comprendre \u00e0 quel point les cycles de la nature sont soigneusement synchronis\u00e9s. Le petit garrot est stable depuis de nombreuses d\u00e9cennies. Si nous commen\u00e7ons \u00e0 observer des changements \u00e0 ses habitudes de migration, ce sera indicateur d\u2019un changement environnemental qui doit \u00eatre remarqu\u00e9 \u00bb, a ajout\u00e9 Mme May.<\/p>\n<p>Au sein de la circonscription de Mme May, le District of North Saanich et la Ville de Sidney travaillent ardemment et depuis longtemps \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger l\u2019habitat du petit garrot dans le refuge d&#8217;oiseaux migrateurs du Havre Shoal, fond\u00e9 en 1931. Ce canard fait partie de l\u2019embl\u00e8me officiel de la Ville de Sidney qui, tout comme North Saanich, a d\u00e9j\u00e0 proclam\u00e9 le 15 octobre la journ\u00e9e du petit garrot.<\/p>\n<p>La petite taille de cet oiseau constitue une adaptation lui permettant d\u2019entrer dans les cavit\u00e9s o\u00f9 se trouvent les nids d\u2019une esp\u00e8ce de pic, le colapte, qui vit dans des trembles. Le petit garrot a donc \u00e9volu\u00e9 avec le colapte et en est d\u00e9pendant. Ses mouvements rapides, sa constante activit\u00e9 et sa pose digne du \u00ab ski aquatique \u00bb au moment de l\u2019accouplement rendent cette esp\u00e8ce importante particuli\u00e8rement attachante et tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9able \u00e0 observer.
