OTTAWA – Today’s Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) report Closing the Gap: Carbon pricing for the Paris target is mislabelled, says Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“When the PBO and others refer to Canada’s commitment to achieve the Paris target, they are actually referring to the target established by Stephen Harper in 2015 and adopted by the Trudeau Liberals,” said Ms. May. “That is not our Paris target. Canada has yet to adopt a target consistent with 1.5 degrees or even 2 degrees.
“This is an emergency. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) categorically states that we need to keep the global average temperature increase below 1.5 degrees in order to maintain a liveable world.
“Mission: Possible – the Green Party’s 20-point Climate Action plan sets out clear initiatives to guide all sectors of Canadian society in transitioning to a vibrant, carbon-free economy. Yesterday, the U.K. set their greenhouse gas emissions target at net zero by 2050. We need to follow suit immediately. Yes, it’s ambitious but we have no choice. It’s time for all hands on deck.”
