The Green Party of Canada is joining with many across the globe to mark the International Day for Tolerance on November 16th.

“At a time when civilians are being killed in the Middle East, it is important to remain true to the ideals at the heart of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. One of these ideals it tolerance. Tolerance requires a commitment to understand others through dialogue,” said Elizabeth May, Green Party of Canada Leader and MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands.

“Political actors should not to exploit citizens’ differences and instill fear of the other,” added May.

“Tolerance can be fostered: education for all, access to the arts and the free flow of ideas are means through which we can enhance social harmony,” concluded Donald Galloway, Green Party Citizenship Critic and by-election candidate in Victoria.

In 1996, the UN General Assembly (by resolution 51/95) invited UN Member States to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November, with activities directed towards both educational establishments and the wider public.
