The City of Ottawa is taking 53 pristine acres of federal land to build a parking garage for the soon to be developed Ottawa Hospital. There are other viable options for the location of the new hospital. Approximately 750 mature and specimen trees will be cut down for this development. When is enough enough?

Earlier this week Elizabeth sent the attached letter to Minister of the Environment Steven Guilbeault asking for a proper review and assessment of the decision to choose this site for the hospital.

Today, Elizabeth tabled this petition. And will continue to do so. The trees are running out of time. The park will soon be gone forever.

Mr. Speaker, I present a petition started by a number of my constituents, but with wide support across Canada.

It deals with the critical ongoing health issue of thousands of Canadians who experienced COVID-19 and are now considered not infectious, but they certainly are not recovered. They are sometimes referred to as long haulers. Sometimes people refer to the illnesses they suffer as long COVID. The petitioners urge the House to consider the many ways in which they are not able to access help or benefits. One of the problems, of course, is referring to someone who no longer has active COVID as recovered. It is completely inaccurate.

The petitioners ask, in brief, for the following things. They ask that the Government of Canada recognize this is a health condition with serious implications, and that it be labelled as such so that people who are suffering have somewhere to go to identify their problem; they ask that there be a registry so that Canadians from coast to coast to coast can be accurately counted, and so we know the extent of the problem; they ask for research into how they can be treated and helped; and they ask for clinics for people who are suffering, because the health effects range from mental confusion and significant damage to organs to being unable to work for months. In fact, some people have been unable to work for more than a year at this point.

The petitioners ask the Government of Canada to move, to help and to provide much-needed medical assistance and financial support to people suffering from COVID many months after they are no longer infectious.

Mr. Speaker, this is my last week in the House of Commons, and this will be my last petition that I present on stopping the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Citizens of Burnaby have signed this petition, immediately calling on the government to prevent this new pipeline from proceeding through British Columbia. They are especially upset about the risks to the environment and our local economy. The signatures really started to pick up after the natural resources minister threatened to use the army on British Columbians to force it through.

I urge the government to pay attention to this and all the other petitions I have presented on this.

Mr. Speaker, it is my distinct honour to rise today to present to the House a petition that was developed by the students at Salt Spring Elementary School. They worked very hard to present a petition to the House calling for urgent action to protect the southern resident killer whales of the Salish Sea.

The petitioners point out that these whales will soon become extinct if we do not save them. They believe that the oceans protection plan is a good start, but that much more needs to be done to protect the southern resident killer whales.

The petitioners call on the government to take action to deal with disturbances from whale-watching operations and from other vessels that are operating in the vicinity of the southern resident killer whales, and to take urgent action to protect the whales from physical and acoustic disturbance.
