Greens mourn the passing of Peter Lougheed

The Green Party joins all Canadians in mourning the passing of former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed, who died yesterday at age 84. “I was so very sad to hear of Peter Lougheed’s death,” said Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada. “He was a visionary and a gentleman.”

As leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservatives, Lougheed transformed the party into a major political force, serving as Premier from 1971 to 1985. Throughout his long career, he worked tirelessly for Albertans and all Canadians, and served as a mentor and inspiration to many. His legacy has forever changed Canadian politics, and his years of dedicated work will continue to have resounding impacts in Alberta and across the country.

The Green Party of Canada wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to the Lougheed family for the loss of this great Canadian.
