Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich—Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising Red Dress Day:
”Today is solemn as we recognise Red Dress Day. This is a time for awareness that Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ+ people continue to be disproportionately at risk in this country. Canada needs a Red Dress Alert system now. I asked the Prime Minister last month: is it fair and just to provide just $1.3 million for the Red Dress Alert initiative over three years, while we spend $47 million to prevent car theft? We need to act on all the calls for justice from the MMIWG2+ peoples – including Guaranteed Livable income, shutting down the man camps, and safe and affordable public transport.”
