Re: Strengthening the RDSP for today’s economic realities

Dear Minister Hajdu,

I am writing to respectfully urge your office to consider increasing the lifetime contribution limit to the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and to index this cap to inflation moving forward.

Constituents and financial professionals in Saanich—Gulf Islands have voiced strong support for modernizing the RDSP to reflect today’s economic realities. This reform would be a meaningful step toward advancing equality, strengthening disability rights, and supporting long-term financial security.

The RDSP is a vital tool in helping Canadians with disabilities achieve long-term financial security. However, its $200,000 lifetime contribution cap, set during the 2008 global financial crisis, has not kept pace with inflation or today’s economic realities.

I therefore ask that your department adopt two key reforms:

  1. Increase the RDSP’s lifetime contribution limit to reflect current and future financial needs; and
  2. Index the cap to inflation to ensure the RDSP remains a meaningful and sustainable tool for future generations.

These changes would enhance the RDSP’s impact and reaffirm our shared commitment to economic equity for people with disabilities. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this proposal further to ensure programs serving vulnerable populations remain effective and equitable over time.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth May, O.C.
