Statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“It has been 35 years since the murder of 14 innocent women attending École Polytechnique. This was a brutal attack and clear case of gender-based violence, and it remains the most haunting act of violence against women and misogyny in Canadian history. They were killed solely because they were women, and specifically because they were women studying to become engineers. We will not forget these women, and this day of remembrance reaffirms Canada’s commitment to take action toward fighting hatred which fuels violence against women.

Today the fight continues. Vulnerable communities like Indigenous women, trans women and racialized and immigrant women all face disproportionate violence and their loved ones often never receive justice. We can end gender-based violence. We must create a world that is safe for all women.”
