I am appalled at the news that Peter Ross and his team running the local Department of Fisheries and Oceans contaminants program are losing their jobs as that program is cut by the federal government.
It seems clear, as Saanich-Gulf Islands MP Elizabeth May indicated, that the federal Conservatives are ideologically opposed to this science. In fact, they appear to be at war with science and the collection of data in general – witness the “reformulated” census, the cuts to Arctic research and the shutdown of the Experimental Lakes Area, just to name a few.
Through my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I read Ross’s scientific journal articles and found them to be informative and of excellent quality, and I am saddened that another bright example of Canadian science in the DFO will be lost.
