Elizabeth May renews call for independent inquiry into SNC Lavalin affair

OTTAWA – Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) today renewed her demand for the appointment of an independent non-partisan commissioner to conduct a full public inquiry into the SNC-Lavalin affair.

“The Green Party was the first to call for an independent inquiry into whether then Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould faced inappropriate pressure from the Prime Minister’s office to exempt SNC-Lavalin from criminal prosecution,” said Ms. May. “In light of yesterday’s testimony from Ms. Wilson-Raybould, it is more urgent than ever that all the players in this sordid saga are called to account for their actions.”

Ms. May said that based on what Ms. Wilson-Raybould told the House of Commons justice committee yesterday, the Clerk of the Privy Council Michael Wernick should be fired immediately.

“Yesterday’s testimony has given us a rare glimpse of one of the major causes of our broken democracy — the insidious culture of ‘fixers’ populating the Prime Minister’s Office,” said Ms. May. “This is not unique to the Trudeau Liberals, it was the same or worse under Stephen Harper. And it must be exposed and stopped if we are to have any chance of restoring Canadians’ faith in their democratic institutions.”

Ms. May said Ms. Wilson-Raybould is 100 percent credible and praised her courage and integrity. “No wonder the PMO fixers didn’t know how to handle her.”
