Elizabeth May’s Statement on Black History Month

OTTAWA ― February 1 marks the beginning of the 23rd annual Black History Month in Canada.

The Green Party of Canada honours the achievements made by black Canadians, while acknowledging that more still needs to be done to promote equality.

“The motion to recognize February as Black History Month in Canada was introduced to the House of Commons in December, 1995 by the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Two decades later, it’s important for young people to celebrate the stories of black Canadians and the many sacrifices and contributions they have made to Canadian society,.

“We must also celebrate current successes and work collectively to oppose racism and xenophobia in all its forms. We view the diversity of our nation not as a liability, but rather as a shared strength and source of pride. I encourage all Canadians to take part in the many events recognizing Black History Month in their communities.”
