May inspires a greener generation in Cowichan

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May left an impression on Shawnigan Lake students Tuesday as she spoke about the potentially damaging effects of pipelines and the dangers of rushing to develop natural resources without proper review and safeguards.

A grade 6 to 8 teacher at the Dwight International School, Sonia Furstenau, believes the Green Party leader put the economy and the environment into perspective, quoting an American ecological economist, Herman Daly.

“’The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary to the environment’, and I think in the school it’s recognized that we can’t talk about the economy if we do not take care of the environment and where the wealth comes from.”
