The “robocall” scandal involving allegations of voter-suppression calls in up to 34 ridings across Canada during the last federal election had its roots in Saanich-Gulf Islands in the election of 2008, Green Party leader Elizabeth May said Monday.

“I believe the robocalls system was piloted in Saanich-Gulf Islands in 2008,” said May, elected MP for the riding last May. “I can’t make any allegations who was responsible for robocalls in 2008. But whoever did it got away with it.”An Ottawa Citizen investigation revealed evidence last week of a “systematic voter-suppression campaign” in highly contested ridings during the 2011 election.
