Today marks the first day of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, as well as the the Bandi Chhor Divas, the Sikh festival of liberation. On this day, Jains also celebrate the attainment of moksha by Mahavira.
Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands, has issued the following statement on Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Today, families in my riding and across Canada gather to give gifts, share meals and celebrate the triumph of light over darkness.
It is also a time to celebrate the many important contributions of Canada’s Jain, Hindu and Sikh communities to the richness and diversity of our country’s cultural mosaic.
On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I extend my warmest wishes for a joyous festival of lights.”
