Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising National Seniors Day:
“Today I am honoured to emcee a rally in Victoria, BC with Seniors for Climate Action! On this National Seniors Day, I want to acknowledge those who have helped build our country. Seniors are beacons in our communities who go above and beyond to contribute to a more diverse and rich Canadian culture. However seniors have also faced enormous challenges, especially since the pandemic. Skyrocketing costs of living and a lack of affordable housing is increasingly hurting the ability of seniors to age with dignity. Being able to afford a safe and accessible to live and purchase nutritious groceries should never be a privilege. People should not have to go back to work after retirement to pay the bills.
Let’s fight for affordable and comprehensive home care that allows people to age in place if they choose. Let’s implement a groceries and essentials benefit and finally bring in a guaranteed livable income to reduce poverty. As well, we must fight and ensure Canada is proactive on climate resiliency for our grandchildren and their grandchildren. We know the value seniors bring to the table. Seniors deserve much more from our government for our contributions.”
