Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising Vimy Ridge Day:
“On the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, we remember those in the Canadian Corps who in 1917 successfully captured the German-occupied ridge after four days of grueling warfare. This was monumental and helped turn the tide in WWI, but it also left nearly 3600 dead and thousands more casualties. Today the Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands tall as a symbol of peace. One of the statues at the memorial, Canada Bereft, personifies the young nation of Canada mourning those who were lost to this conflict. Lest we forget.”
