(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement on World Oceans Day:
“World Oceans Day is reminder of the pivotal role oceans play in regulating the earth’s ecosystems and of the threats these awe-inspiring waters face. Ocean temperatures are rising in some areas and dropping in others, while currents are slowing. Fish stocks continue to decline and plastic pollution is a growing threat to marine life,” said Ms. May.
“We are further reminded of our commitments to the Paris Agreement and how greenhouse gases are causing the oceans to acidify. Canada is dangerously off-course in meeting our Paris targets and Finance Minister Morneau’s recent announcement that the government is buying the Trans Mountain pipeline inspires no confidence that a course correction is in the offing.
This disastrous pipeline and tanker scheme is exactly the type of project we must reject if we are to safeguard our oceans for future generations.”
