This week, Mike hosted a press conference to continue pushing the government to reintroduce legislation for the Canada Disability Benefit. He was joined by Michelle Hewitt of Disability Without Poverty, as well as Senators Chantal Petitclerc and Kim Pate, and Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.
Just a day later the government reintroduced the bill unchanged, despite having a year to make improvements. Mike will continue applying pressure, working across party lines to get support to Canadians with disabilities who have been forced to wait too long.
While questioning the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in debate, Elizabeth brought many concerns of Saanich – Gulf Islands to light, such as the condition of the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales, and toxic fish factories.
On June 1st, Elizabeth spoke alongside other MPs and the Prime Minister at the raising of the Pride flag on Parliament Hill.
Question Period
Elizabeth’s question this week highlighted the plight of women and girls in Afghanistan. She stated that Afghanistan has “declared war on its women and girls,” and called on the government to enact a feminist foreign policy in the area.
In QP on Wednesday, Mike defended NDP MP Gord John’s Private Member’s Bill C-216 that would decriminalize the possession of certain illicit drugs. He reminded the government that this was their last chance to support the legislation that would be a first step to addressing the drug poisoning crisis.
