(OTTAWA) February 8, 2016 – Gong Xi Fa Cai! Today marks the first day of festivities for the Chinese New Year. The Green Party of Canada and Party Leader Elizabeth May, MP (Saanich-Gulf Islands), join in the celebration by wishing all Canadians a year of prosperity and peace.
The new year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, so the date changes every year. The holiday has more than 4,000 years of history and is the grandest annual event for Chinese people.
“Today we take time to acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of Chinese-Canadians and the role their vibrant culture plays in shaping our country. May the Year of the Monkey bring positive change and new beginnings to all,” May said.
