Statement on Black History Month 2024

Please read the following statement issued by Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising February as Black History Month.

“Black History Month is a time to reflect on and honour the achievements of Black Canadians. The motion to recognise February as Black History Month in Canada was introduced to the House of Commons in 1995 by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.

Although much progress has been made for civil rights, discrimination and violence continues to impact the Black community in Canada. We must celebrate current successes while continuing to work collectively to oppose anti-Black racism.”
