Statement on Canadian Environment Week and World Environment Day

Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising Canadian Environment Week and World Environment Day:

“As I recognise Canadian Environment Week and World Environment Day, I am reminded of the power of collective action for the planet. While the federal government drags its feet, environmental organisations, activists and Indigenous defenders have stood up to halt logging of old growth, to challenge the continued presence of toxic fish factories and to protect endangered species like the Southern Resident Killer Whale. It is far past time for the federal government to do what is required to hold warming at 1.5 degrees.

Creating a national clean electricity grid and providing cooling stations during heat waves should not be controversial ideas. The climate crisis is reshaping the world around us and Canada needs to take bold and brave steps to adapt. Let us celebrate World Environment Day and reaffirm our commitment to working towards a more sustainable Canada and planet.”
