Statement on the anniversary of Chantel Moore’s death

Please see the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the anniversary of the 2020 death of Chantel Moore:

Four years since Chantel Moore was shot and killed on her threshold by a member of the Edmunston, New Brunswick police force. The killer claimed self defence, but there is no video or audio evidence to back his claims. The knife he claimed he was threatened with was not found near her body. Chantel’s experience reflects the reality of Indigenous people across Canada who fear the threat of death by wellness check. We are long overdue for an Indigenous-led public inquiry on systemic racism in Canada’s justice systems.”
