Statement on the anniversary of the Final Report of the Inquiry into MMIWG

Please see the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the 5th anniversary of the release of the Final Report of the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

Today marks five years since the release of the Final Report of the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). When they delivered their 231 recommendations to the government, the inquiry commissioners clearly laid out what is needed to protect Indigenous women, girls and Two-spirit people from systemic violence. Yet to date, many of these recommendations have gone unfulfilled.

We can and must take immediate action and take meaningful steps towards reconciliation. Canada must implement a Red Dress Alert system. We need investments in affordable ground transportation to deter people from hitchhiking and putting themselves at risk. A guaranteed liveable income could lift many out of poverty. These are achievable actions that were recommended in 2019. The time to act is now.”
