Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising International Day of Literacy:
“Today is International Day of Literacy! The government must do more to address functional illiteracy. Nearly 50% of Canadians struggle with literacy. Those who are functionally illiterate are resilient in the face of significant stigma and barriers to opportunities. Dyslexia also affects the ability of people of all ages to fully participate in activities, from children in schools to adults in the workplace. We need to help teachers who teach reading skills to children and accommodate kids who haven’t been given the chance to gain crucial early reading skills. Proud to support the mission to close the literacy gap in Canada!”
