Statement on World Press Freedom Day

Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising World Press Freedom Day:

“A free press is a foundation of any democracy. It ensures Canadians maintain the right to transparency and accountability from our government. It is more important than ever to uplift and support journalists and freedom of information in both Canada and abroad. News media access at home has been threatened recently, with Meta blocking Canadians from viewing news content on Facebook and Instagram. Violence against journalists and the censorship of their voices has also risen. On World Press Freedom Day, we honour those journalists who lose their lives speaking truth to power and we recommit to standing firmly in support of a free, strong and courageous press.”
