Statement on International Day of Older Persons

Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich– Gulf Islands, has issued the following statement on International Day of Older Persons:

“Canada is an aging society – By 2030, almost one in four Canadians will be over age 65. It should go without saying that all Canadians deserve a comfortable, secure and dignified retirement, yet for far too many people, that dream remains out of reach.

That’s why Green MPs are working every day to implement a Guaranteed Livable Income, to make our tax system fairer, and to introduce a national pharmacare program to reduce the burden of prescription drug costs.

International Day of Older Persons is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our elders, and to express our profound gratitude for their contributions to our society. It is also a time to reflect on how we can do more to support older persons in our communities.”
