Statement on National Indigenous People’s Day and Indigenous History Month

Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising National Indigenous People’s Day and Indigenous History Month.

Today, as we celebrate Indigenous History Month, I am honoured to recognise National Indigenous People’s Day. The importance of meaningful engagement with Indigenous culture and learning Indigenous stories, current and past, cannot be overstated.

It is the responsibility of settler culture Canadians to learn about the diversity of Indigenous nations and cultures. We must implement the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.”
