Statement on National Volunteer Week

April 24, 2017

Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), issued the following statement during National Volunteer Week:

“National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate those in our communities, workplaces and families who selflessly give their energy to others. As our population ages, volunteering is becoming a more crucial component of Canadian society. Nearly 13 million Canadians volunteer each year to strengthen the health and resilience of our communities, but that number is in decline.

“To strengthen volunteerism, employers can lead by example by building volunteer programs into their corporate social responsibility strategies, particularly for teens, who along with seniors are the most engaged volunteering Canadians.

“During National Volunteer Week, I extend my sincere thanks to the many volunteers across Canada!”
