Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the anniversary of the 2013 Lac-Mégantic rail disaster:
“Today we remember all those whose lives were taken far too soon in the 2013 Lac-Mégantic disaster. Canada is still failing the survivors, the community and all victims of rail tragedies by not taking action on our outdated rail safety laws and regulations.
Reminding all that pipelines with dilbit – such as TMX- are not safer than rail. The Lac Megantic tragedy was due to cargo of extremely explosive Bakkan Shale. We need more inquiries and oversight in the train and petroleum industry to ensure safety is the priority.”
