Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party, acknowledging the passing of WWII veteran and 105 year old constituent John Hillman:
“I am saddened to learn about the passing at age 105 of my constituent and WWII veteran John Hillman. He joined the Royal Air Force at just age 17 in 1937, becoming a wireless operator in France, South Africa, Italy and Burma.
When he was 101, he was inspired by a fellow Burma veteran in the UK to fundraise for Save the Children Fund. From 2020-2023, John raised nearly $500,000 by walking courtyard laps at his retirement home in Oak Bay.
He was a beloved community member who lived life to the fullest, attending every veterans association meeting and always smiling on his walks (even in heat waves!). Today we remember John and his accomplishments. What a life!”
