Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the anniversary of the fatal shootings in 2017 at the Centre culturel islamique de Quebec.
“Seven years ago, innocent worshippers at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City were attacked by a gunman. This was a horrific act of Islamophobic violence against a mosque, a place of worship and peace. Six people were killed and another five were seriously injured. Loved ones of the victims, first responders and community members continue to suffer from the trauma of that day. This day of remembrance reminds us of the need to stand up to Islamophobia, which is sadly growing in Canada.”
