OTTAWA – Today is World Day of Social Justice. As one of its six core values, the Green Party of Canada respects the principle of social justice, and acknowledges that Canada must always create personal and social development opportunities for all its citizens.
“On World Day of Social Justice, it is critical that we address the growing income and social disparities in Canada,” Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, said. “Over the last 30 years, middle and lower-class family incomes have shrunk. We must build a fair and just society; one where poverty is eliminated and everyone is valued.”
World Day of Social Justice is commemorated each year on February 20th. This year’s theme is ending human trafficking and forced labour. The United Nations General Assembly first recognized the day in 2007.
