Statement by Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands, on the occasion of the International Day of Peace:
“The theme chosen this year by the United Nations for the International Day of Peace is ‘SustainablePeace for a Sustainable Future’. This could be the theme of our Green foreign policy. Many conflicts in the world are intimately related to natural resources such as gold, water or oil. Making sure these resources are managed in a sustainable manner is key to building sustainable peace, especially in post-conflict societies.”
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.
