On this the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, the Green Party of Canada joins Green parties worldwide in calling for global nuclear disarmament.
On this day in 1945, more than 100,000 civilians were instantly killed by the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. On August 9, 1945, a further 60,000 people were killed in the bombing of Nagasaki. Tens of thousands more died later from exposure to the radiation.
“Each year on Hiroshima Day, we reflect on the unimaginable dangers of nuclear weapons, and we reaffirm our commitment to making nuclear disarmament a reality,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands.
