Statement on the anniversary of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia

Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the anniversary of the 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia:

Four years ago, twenty two people were killed and three others injured in a preventable tragedy largely due to the incompetence, sexism and racism within the RCMP. This devastating mass shooting, the worst in Canadian history, horrified Nova Scotians and all Canadians. As more details emerged, it was clear that the RCMP had failed to properly inform the public or act on previous reports of the gunman’s violent behaviour.

The Mass Casualty Commission Final Report was released in March 2023. The RCMP must be torn down to its foundations and the foundations dynamited. More must be done to ensure the RCMP does not walk away from these deaths with a shrug. The report clearly lays out a new approach to community safety that would prevent deaths, rebuild public trust in our emergency systems and address the epidemic of domestic violence. Today we honour those who were taken far too soon from their loved ones and we commit to fulfilling the Final Report’s recommendations to ensure a tragedy like this never occurs again.”
