Please read the following statement from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada, recognising the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery:
“Right now, there are more than 50 million people enslaved around the world. Modern slavery is on the rise and includes situations of exploitation like forced labour and marriage, debt bondage and human trafficking. Over half of cases are found in upper-middle and high income countries like Canada. I am committed to seeing Canada fulfill our Sustainable Development Goals commitment to end slavery by 2030. Everyone deserves to live life with freedom and dignity.”
